One has to wonder how the Bush administration intends to continue our "long, hard slog" in Iraq, considering that our forces are already stretched thin, and our "Coalition of the Willing" doesn't seem to be willing to put their own troops on the ground. Surely our government would never consider reinstituting the draft over a preemptive war. Right?
According to a report by Dave Lindorff, the Pentagon has quietly launched a campaign to bring community draft boards back up to full strength.
It seems inconceivable that Republicans would be willing to suffer the political fallout that goes along with calling for a draft, but maybe realistically the neoconservative Bush Doctrine of preemptive wars and nation-building simply can't function without one, and to "stay the course" Bush will have no other choice.
It definitely looks like the Pentagon is hedging their bets.
Thinking long-term, I have to suspect Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle, and the rest of the neocons would be looking forward to a new draft. Without one, how could they possibly groom draft-dodging hawkish conservatives to succeed them in future administrations?
